Nestled in the heart of County Westmeath, the Church of the Immaculate Conception stands as a testament to the rich history and deep-rooted faith of the local community. This church is not just a place of worship; it is a symbol of resilience, tradition, and the enduring spirit of the people who have gathered within its walls for generations.

In this blog post, we will take a journey through the history of our church. We will explore its origins, architectural features, and the role it has played in the lives of the local community. Whether you are a history buff, a local resident, or simply curious about this beautiful church, there is something here for everyone.

The Origins of the Church of the Immaculate Conception

The parish of Glasson is also known as Tubberclair parish and shares its boundaries with the parish of Drumraney/Tang and also with the diocese of Ardagh & Clonmacnoise. There is only one parish church dedicated to Our Lady under the title of 'Her Immaculate Conception'.

The original church was built in 1807.  The present church was rebuilt during the 1830's. The long aisle was added during Fr. Murray's time and it was re-roofed in 1891. It was probably at this time that the old gallery, now gone, was added. Extensive repairs were effected by Fr. Gaughran during 1917-18. It was at this time too that porches were added. The tower, which is a beautiful feature, was built in 1881. Each successive parish priest has carried out improvements to the church at Tubberclair. The latest restoration was carried out during 1999 in preparation for the Jubilee Year. The church was re-opened and re-dedicated by Bishop Michael Smith on the 17th October 1999.

Architectural Features

One of the most striking aspects of the Church of the Immaculate Conception is its architectural design. The church features a classic Gothic Revival style, characterised by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses. These elements not only add to the church's aesthetic appeal but also reflect the architectural trends of the time.

Interior Design

Inside, the church is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows that depict various biblical scenes. These windows are not just decorative; they tell stories of faith and devotion. The soft light that filters through them creates a serene atmosphere, inviting worshippers to reflect and pray.

The altar is another focal point of the church. It is intricately designed and serves as the heart of the worship space. The altar is where the sacraments are celebrated, and it holds great significance for the congregation.
